CASHIER

PURPOSE STATEMENT: To provide courteous service to customers in addition to quick and accurate checkout of purchases.

 

SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. To provide customer service by smiling, greeting and thanking all customers.
  2. To process customer purchases quickly and accurately by the operation of an electronic cash register, scanner and scale.
  3. To clean checkstand area by sweeping floors, cleaning checklanes, registers and scales.
  4. To prevent loss of money and merchandise by careful product handling, completion of price checks on not-on-file or mis-marked items, correct identification of produce, counting of money, and accurately using store procedures for the acceptance of coupons, WIC and other vouchers, checks, credit and debit cards.
  5. To assure the safety of self, customers and co-workers by understanding and practicing store safety rules and notifying a supervisor of any potential hazard immediately.
  6. To bag customer purchases quickly, ensuring that the bags are not overloaded and the merchandise is not damaged.
  7. To understand the operation, safety requirements and restraints of an electronic cash register, scanner, scale and intercom system.
  8. To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisors and managers, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers.
  1. Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide).  Able to count and verify customer change, checks, WIC Voucher, size/count and coupons.
  2. Ability to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers concerning store policy/procedures and use of equipment.
  3. The ability to read and write English.  Able to read instructions, labels, printed paper and forms.
  4. Ability to make judgments concerning customers and the checkout of purchases.
  5. Good interpersonal communication skills.

 

PREFERRED:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. A stable work and educational history.
  3. Prior experience in a related type of job.
  4. Prior experience operating a cash register, scale, intercom.

 

 

TASKS OF THE JOB – This position generally involves:

 1.  Mobility:

  • Move to perform: the completion of price checks in aisles, the removal of bottom-of-cart items, the bagging of purchases and to return “go backs and “face”/clean/stock shelves: approximate maximum of 100 yards.
  1. Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
  2. Move a maximum of 40 lbs. from 6 inches to 48 inches.
  3. Move a maximum of 40 lbs. up to 15 feet.
  4. Pick up items from floor/case/shelf/cart.
  5. Attain merchandise on the top of grocery shelves, approximately 84 inches from the floor.
  6. Bend and twist at the waist while cleaning, moving/removing merchandise and loading/unloading merchandise.
  7. Handle cash, checks, WIC and other vouchers, credit/debit, EBT transactions, paper/plastic bags and store’s multi-page ads.
  8. Grasp and handle wet/cold/hot grocery products.
  9. Recognize merchandise, customers, scanner light, amount tendered, cash, checks, EBT cards, credit/debit cards, WIC vouchers, coupons, shelf tags and signs.
  10. Perceive color difference in produce/grocery items.
  11. Recognize the “beep” from scanners.
  12. Communicate with customers, co-workers answering questions and responding to comments.
  13. Answer customer questions and respond to comments.
  14. Use and respond to the intercom/phone system.
  15. Identify labels, signs, tags, ads, checks, WIC vouchers, numbers and cash register keys.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Inside work with variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity caused by the opening of store entrance doors.
